Fremantle Library Local History Collection image no. 143, Fielding Studio, c. 1924. Fremantle Technical School, South Terrace. Erected by Public Works Department under Hillson Beasley (architect) in 1912. Opened in 1913. Fremantle Infants and Girls School (old section) foundation stone laid 5.12.1877. Note: Partial view of the Oddfellows Hotel, erected 1887.
The photograph above shows the Technical School on the corner of Essex Street and South Terrace. At the left, the facade of the Girls School may be seen, in front of the Oddfellows Hotel (now the Norfolk Hotel) in the distance, with the word FAMILY distinguishing it.
This was until recently the Challenger Institute of Technology, and before that Challenger TAFE. It has been sold (2020) to the Prendiville Group, a tourism company. The company’s headquarters will relocate to South Terrace within the technical institute building. Its plans for the site also include a training school for hospitality professionals, visitor accommodation and a new food and beverage venue.
